If most dance studios seem to have qualified, friendly, experienced teachers, and a big show at the end of the year, aren’t they pretty much the same? Does it really matter which studio you decide to enroll at? Yes. There are 5 main factors that can make a huge difference in the quality of instruction your child receives, the amount of extra work the parent must deal with and the overall enjoyment and satisfaction of being involved with a dance program. Here are five things that every parent should consider before deciding on a dance studio for their child.
1. What is the size of the class?
Each child will receive more personalized attention, learn more and have fun if the preschool dance class has fewer students in it. Learning the basic fundamentals of dance will assist your child for future growth and development. It is easier for a teacher to make sure each student understands the concepts and instructions with younger children. A smaller class size also allows our teachers to ensure that students are not developing bad habits or improper technique. Our smaller class size makes sure that fundamental concepts are not being missed. We limit our preschool classes (ages 3 and 4) to a maximum of 12 students per class, with one teacher and two assistants. Kindergarten classes (age 5) will have a maximum of 15 students per class, with one teacher and one assistant.
2. Will I have an opportunity to view my child’s progress throughout the year?
Dancers Edge feels it is important that your child feel the independence of attending a dance class with their friends and teacher. In addition, you should also have the opportunity to view your child’s progress. Observing the instruction in class will help you relate to your child and enjoy the experience with them. We offer “parent viewing” the first week of every month. Your dancer will be excited to showcase their talents for you.
3. What is required for the year-end recital?
Dancers Edge will have its annual year-end recital in June. A dance recital is a great way for your child to learn and progress. The opportunity for your dancer to dress up and showcase their talents is an extremely rewarding and fulfilling experience. Other studios may require parents to sew their child’s costumes or find their own seamstresses. This can be very inconvenient and frustrating for parents who are busy or unable to sew. Dancers Edge will order costumes through professional vendors. A professional seamstress provided by Dancers Edge will alter the costumes free of charge. Parents do not have to worry about any costume hassles. Costumes are placed in a garment bag ready for a dazzling performance.
4. Can I get immediate assistance and customer service?
In many studios the teacher or the studio owner conducts classes and completes the administrative work. The classes may suffer as the teacher has to use class time for customer service issues, or the studio may not have any customer service available if the teacher is occupied in class. Dancers Edge office staff are available during all regular class times offering immediate friendly assistance. We want to make sure that you have the answers to all your questions throughout the year.
5. What extra qualifications do the teachers and staff offer?
In addition to providing nationally recognized teachers and choreographers with university training up to the Masters level, all Dancers Edge teachers and staff are here to provide your child with a safe environment to learn and grow.
